“But what are we going to do?” demanded the workers. “It’s winter, and there’s no place in town to go. We can’t camp out with our families in weather like this. We’ll have to leave town.”

“Mebbe that’s what the operators want,” the sheriff admitted dryly. “Then they can fill your jobs with men they’ll bring in from other sections. Looks like the only thing you fellers can do is go back to work, on their terms.”

Red Gulch seethed. Hotheads among the strikers were for ignoring the court order, convinced that the operators were bluffing. Others were for holding their humble homes by force of arms. Violence and bloodshed were imminent.

A committee visited the Stranger. “Obey the court order,” he counseled. “We don’t want fighting and killing, and nothing will be gained by that. You got ten days. Get ready to obey the order, and leave the rest to me.”

The Church of All Faiths swung into action. Two days after the notice was served on the miners, long trains of wagons began arriving in Red Gulch from the railroad town. They were loaded with lumber and other building materials. A swarm of carpenters and masons came with the wagons. There was plenty of labor available in Red Gulch. On the vacant land south of the town a second town swiftly took shape. Roughly built houses were hastily thrown together. Crude but efficient restaurants were set up and equipped. On the tenth day, an orderly procession of workers moved their furnishings and other possessions from the company owned houses to their new homes. They grinned cheerfully at Sheriff Dobson and his deputies, who stood around with nothing to do, and grinned back in reply. That night The Church of All Faiths was crowded with a cheering company.

“Do right, and trust in the Right, and you’ll always come out ahead,” the Stranger told them. He gestured toward Blaze Loring, who with his new bride sat beside him on the platform.

“Blaze was just aiming to do right, on gen’ral principles, when he found that silver mine for the Church,” he said. “He didn’t figure how much good it would do pronto, but that’s the way with doing good—you never can tell how it will land or how wide a loop it’ll twirl. I wouldn’t doubt but Blaze Loring’s just about the most surprised man in town tonight, and one of the happiest. He sure ought to be, for lots of reasons. He’s made a heap of other folks happy, and there’s no finer way of getting happy yourself.”
